Introduction

When the "Kwang Hye Won" was founded in 1885, its missions were set to provide medical care and to teach western medicine and public health to Koreans. In 1962, the name of department was changed into the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health. In 1966, our department opened the Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) course of public health and has been leading in our nation’s public health. At present, the faculty consists of 12 full time professors and has produced 209 graduates with master's degree and 148 graduates with PhD degree.

Graduate students

The department currently educates 54 graduate students (13 in master's course, 38 in doctor's course, and 3 in unified course) in three research areas: epidemiology, environmental and occupational health, and health service research.

Research activity of the department

The main research areas of the department are epidemiology, environmental health, and health service research. The department gives priority to epidemiological research on cardiovascular disease and cancer, genome epidemiology, and nutritional epidemiology. Environmental health research is composed of main research areas; risk assessment, environmental analysis, environmental health engineering, and environmental epidemiology. Health service research field focuses on medical insurance, hospital management, health planning, and international cooperation in the health care field.

Courses and Descriptions

YPH 6001 EPIDEMIOLOGY
This course is designed to introduce students the basic concept of Epidemiology and research methodologies used in Epidemiology.

YPH 6002 HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION
This course provides and introduces to the field of health policy and management focusing on basic understanding on problems of health services, supply and demand of health care, principle of organization and management, health care systems and so on.

YPH 6003 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
The Environmental Health course focuses on reviewing health hazards, assessing health effects, and a practical problems-solving approach to environmental health problems in Korea. This course offers a general introduction to the health problems caused by contamination of air, water, food, the work place, and other specific environmental medium. Policy required for regulation and alternative strategies to prevent and control environmental health hazards will be addressed.

YPH 6004 BIOSTATISTICS
This course introduces fundamental concepts in applied probability, exploratory data analysis, and statistical inference. The focus is on probability and the analysis of one and two samples. Topics include: discrete and continuous probability models; expectation and variance; central limit theorem; inference including hypothesis testing and confidence for means, proportions, and counts; analysis of variance; regression analysis; elementary non-parametric methods.

YPH 6005 HEALTH PLANNING AND PRACTICE
This course is designed to give students current tools for health planning. Topics include planning process, modeling, linear programming, CPM/PERT, Cost-effectiveness analysis. This course requires groupwork exercise for case presentation.
YPH 6006 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN HEALTH SERVICES
This course deals in the basic methodology of public health. It includes theories of the measuring health, data collection, and analysis. Survey methodology and the way of making a proposal is also discussed. Some understanding of the basic idea of epidemiology and biostatistics is needed to better understand this course.

YPH 7001 INDUSTRIAL HEALTH CARE
This course comprises the review of occupational health, historical aspect of occupational health and assessment of worksite environment. Furthermore, enables students to diagnose ethological factors of occupational disease and to plan the preventive measurements.

YPH 7003 HEALTH INSURANCE
This course is designed to understand the overview and details of health insurance, to identify the issues of Korean health insurance, and to suggest the alternatives of those issues. This course goes on lectures of professor, presentation and discussion of students, examination and final report.

YPH 7004 HEALTH ECONOMICS
This course provides economic theory and practical skills applicable to health services. Topics include overview of health economics, demand for medical care, health insurance, hospital, physicians, reimbursement, alternative delivery system and cost containment.

YPH 7005 PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT
This course is designed to provide students with a basic knowledge and practical application of modern management skills in health care organizations. Building on an introduction to organizational theory, strategic planning, and marketing, the course focuses on the main problems of organizational strategy and the management of human resources. Upon successful completion of the course, students will have a working knowledge of leadership, negotiations, interdisciplinary teams, and communication.

YPH 7010 ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL EPIDEMIOLOGY
The Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology course focuses on review of methods used in investigating health effects caused by the exposure of physical and chemical agents in the environment, and on consideration of policy questions raised by the scientific evidences. Topics include lectures on methodology such as epidemiology, exposure assessment, dose-response assessment and biostatistic, and seminars on the review and critics of current literature.

YPH 7011 QUALITY IMPROVEMENT OF MEDICAL CARE
Concept of adequate medical care, basic principles quality assurance program by structure, process and outcomes, continuous quality improvement/total quality management methods are dealt with. This course provides a basis for students to judge the effectiveness and efficiency of quality improvement.

YPH 7012 HEALTH PROMOTION
This course is designed to introduce basic concept of health promotion, health promotion policies in developed countries, method of planning health promotion activities, and principles of health education. Also development of Korea National Health Promotion Law, and national strategy and plan of health promotion in Korea are reviewed.

YPH 7013 ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY
It is designed primarily for courses dealing with harmful effects of chemicals and physical agents on living systems. It necessitates an understanding of biologic mechanisms as well as the method employed to manage their toxicities
This course comprises systemic and organo-toxicities as well as ecotoxicities owing to environmental pollutants.

YPH 7014 ANALYSIS OF HEALTH POLICY
This course offers political and analytical insights into understanding health policy making and into developing strategies that influence health policy outcomes. In addition, this course addresses the politics of health policy agenda setting and implementation; theory of market failures and efficiency; correcting markets and government failures; and cost-benefit analysis.
YPH 7017 ADVANCED TOPICS IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND MANAGEMENT
Owing to changing physical environment in regionally and globally, it is faced on new health issues concerned with environmental pollution and deterioration.
The new health problems will be determined and discussed for the solution;
1) New and future issues on environmental health
2) Risk transition
3) Risk assessment and management
4) Sustainable development for environmental health etc.
 
YPH 7018 ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ASSESSMENT (I)
Environmental risk assessment is a methodology that predicts the health risk from future effects of environmental problem.
This course aims to introduce the practical method of health risk assessment procedure and to study its prospect, application and future work of environmental health in Korea.

YPH 7019 THE STUDY ON PUBLIC HEALTH LAW SYSTEM
As the concept of public health law has expanded its range from health care to public health, it is required to acquire the broader concept of medical law, especially in the public health area and to apprehend the issues in legal and ethical point of views and the approaching methods for each issue.

YPH 7020 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (EIA)
This course is designed to introduce the broad sense of preconsideration to pollution control and nature conservation in advance to environmental planning, construction and other statutory planning.
It is primarily concerned with 󰡒health󰡓in ecosystem and quality of life as well as social well-being due to environmental deterioration and pollution whereafter development projects would be processed

YPH 7021 PHARMACOECONOMICS
The objective of this course is to have practical knowledge and skills of economic evaluation of health care technology, in particular focusing on pharmaceutical products.
Upon completion of this course, students are able to understand and critique literature about pharmacoeconomic study. Through practices with case studies, students are trained to conduct pharmacoeconomic studies independently.

YPH 7022 ENVIRONMENTAL EPIDEMIOLOGY
This course focus on methods to study relations between environmental exposures and morbidity and mortality in population and subgroups. For students applying as single-course students, it is recommended to take course “Epidemiology” and “biostatistics” or Public health research methods”.

YPH 7023 SCIENTIFIC WRITING AND PEER REVIEWING FOR HEALTH SCIENCES
This course will review and discuss steps involved in writing, submitting, peer reviewing, and revising manuscripts for publication. Students will be expected to read assignments, hand in written work for each class and to participate actively in discussion. Before taking this course, it is recommended to take courses “Epidemiology” and “Public Health Research Methods.”

YPH 7024 ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ASSESSMENT (II)

YPH 7025 COMPARATIVE HEALTH CARE POLICY AND LAW
By studying and analyzing each health care policy, law and legal system in other countries, especially developed countries such as USA, England, Japan and Germany we can understand the structure of Korean health care system and Korean legal system, furthermore Korean health cae policy and law.

YPH 8001 ADVANCED BIOSTATISTICS
The focus will be on: Topics in methodology of applied statistics, simple linear regressions; a matrix formulation of multiple linear regression; inference for coefficients, predicted values, and residuals; tests of hypotheses; graphical displays and regression diagnostics; graphical displays; model building; regression models for non normal data; survival analysis; limited dependent models; elementary multivariate analysis.

YPH 8002 EPIDEMIOLOGIC METHODOLOGY
This course is designed to introduce students to the modern epidemiologic methodology. Modern epidemiology is a biomedical discipline at the interface of clinical practice and basic medical science.
YPH 8003 HEALTH POLICY AND POLITICS
The purpose of this course is to outline the political dimensions of health as well as policy process-the way in which policy is made. Both domestic and world wide health policy issues are identified and the alternatives are also discussed.

YPH 8005 HEALTH MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM
This course is designed to introduce students to the key issues in health information systems such as concepts and theoretical background, technical aspects, applications, and managerial aspects. Applications of health information systems include : national health information network, hospital information systems, medical decision support systems(or expert systems), and health center information systems.

YPH 8006 ADMINISTRATIVE BEHAVIOR IN HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATION
This course is designed to introduce those who interested in systematic understanding of organizational principles, practices and insights pertinent to the management of health services organizations.
This courses are organized in five parts.
1. First part provides an overall perspective on the study of health services organizations
2. Second part deals with fundamental building blocks of managerial activity involving motivations, leadership, conflict management, and negotiations
3. Third part deals with internal organizational issues including work design, coordination and communication, and political process
4. Fourth part focused on performance issue related organization design, strategic alliances, innovation and change
5. Fifth part focused on strategic issues and attempts to anticipate future health care organization issue.

YPH 8007 STUDY ON LAW OF HEALTH CARE
This course is designed to introduce Health law-law as it affects the professionals, institutions and manages that deliver and finance health care.
Analysis of legal issues particular to health law tend to focus on several core concerns.
There are : oversight of the quality ; control of costs assurance of adequate access to services; and protection of the individual patient as person
There concerns emerge in each of the areas addressed by this specialty, where the question involves the appropriate structuring of business relationships among the institutions and professionals providing health care services or the appropriated standard to be used for the determination of death.

YPH 9001 OCCUPATIONAL DISEASE CARE
Review of diagnosis, ethological factors and natural courses of occupational disease. Understanding of the importance of occupational disease and management plan.
