Lee, Byung Seok

Yonsei University College of Medicine was founded in 1885, with the opening of “Kwanghyewon.” Kwanghyewon was established to provide western-style medical treatment to the people of Korea, while also serving as an educational facility for the country’s youth to learn medicine and sanitary sciences. In 1886, Kwanghyewon was renamed as “Chejungwon” (meaning “universal helpfulness”). Chejungwon also played an important role as Korea’s first medical school that provided formal education and training in medicine. In 1900, Dr. Oliver R. Avison presented his proposal entitled “Comity in Medical Mission” at the Ecumenical Missionary Conference in New York. Mr. Louis H. Severance, an American philanthropist in the audience, was enthralled upon hearing the speech, so he decided to contribute to building a new hospital called “Severance Memorial Hospital” in Korea. Even after Mr. Severance’s death, his son and daughter graciously continued to support the hospital.

As the first institution of western medicine in Korea, Yonsei University College of Medicine has remained the country’s leader in medicine for the past 128 years. While celebrating our achievements in Korea, we are now looking to take our College of Medicine to a global stage. We are confident that we can achieve this goal with the help of our outstanding faculty, students, academic traditions, clinical expertise, and strength of alumni who are equipped with the Severance spirit, which is the “Love of God.” Our mission, here at Yonsei University College of Medicine, is to foster the development of distinguished physicians, scientists, and leaders who exemplify the Love of God through their excellent work in the field of medicine. We also aim to 1) nurture talented individuals through mentorship, collaboration, and creativity; 2) develop world-renowned medical research; and 3) fulfill the spirit of Severance by serving other with our special gifts.

We hope to provide an atmosphere where all staff members and students can enthusiastically work together and learn to reach their greatest potentials. As we strive to further strengthen our programs in clinical and basic research as well as education, we will continually seek ways to expand our school’s essential support functions, distribute resources in the most efficient manner, and enhance cooperation, creativity, and open innovation. We are always here to serve our community, and become the first and the best in the world.

We express our sincere gratitude for all of your support.
